Festival Weekend Volunteer Position Descriptions

Please note that these are brief descriptions of the various weekend volunteer positions that will be available during the 2011 Toronto International Deaf Film and Arts Festival. 

 

Further details of the various roles will be provided through volunteer orientation on Thursday May 5, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at The 519 Church Street Community Centre.

Knowledge of American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, the film industry, and the festival itself are assets to all volunteer descriptions below.

Individual Ticket Sales Volunteers:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday May 14, 2011- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday May 15, 2011- 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Location:  Innis Town Hall

Description: Volunteers will sell tickets during the festival to patrons who have not already purchased tickets.  This position will requires that volunteers have interpersonal skills, specifically, being able to communicate clearly, being polite and cooperative with patrons, sponsors, members of the media, other volunteers, and board members. Volunteers will be handling money in this position.

 

Festival Passes/Media/Sponsors Registration Volunteers:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and; Saturday May 14, 2011- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Location: Innis Town Hall

Description: Volunteers in this position will be responsible for assisting festival patrons with picking up their passes and other related material.  Sponsors and members of the media will also pick up passes at this station.  Frank Folino, Associate Director (Sponsorship, Development and Finance), will work with and supervise volunteers at this station.  Volunteers placed in this position will require an excellent interpersonal skills and professional behaviour.

 

Front of House:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday May 14, 2011- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday May 15, 2011- 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Location:  Innis Town Hall

Description: This position requires that volunteers guide and inform festival patrons in regards to ticket purchases, ticket and pass pick-ups, ticket collection, and other information that patrons may need upon arrival of the festival.  Volunteers should be out-going, sociable, and pleasant, as they will be assisting festival patrons.

 

Theatre Ushers:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday May 14, 2011- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday May 15, 2011- 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Location:  Innis Town Hall

Description: Volunteer ushers will stand by the theatre doors directing festival patrons, providing information regarding film screenings, preventing entrance into the theatre when screenings have already begun.  Ushers will be required to retain information about timing, theatre rules, and festival programming, and should be polite and courteous to festival patrons.

 

Food Servers:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Location: Innis Town Hall

Description: Food servers will carry trays of hors d'oeuvre throughout the venue to festival patrons, and providing information on ingredients.  Skills that will assist volunteers in this position are interpersonal skills, an outgoing attitude, and the ability to carry a tray.

 

Merchandise Assistant:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and Saturday May 14, 2011- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Location: Innis Town Hall

Description: Volunteers will sell festival merchandise to patrons and assist film-makers set-up booths to sell their merchandise.  Skill requirements include: experiencing dealing with money, and interpersonal skills.

 

Mayfest Booth Volunteers:

Date & Time: Friday May 13, 2011- 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: The Queen Elizabeth Building at Exhibition Place, 180 Prince’s Blvd

Description: Volunteers in this position will be responsible for informing Mayfest goers about the Toronto International Deaf Film and Arts Festival and its history, sell remaining tickets for the festival, and sell raffle tickets for prizes.  Volunteers that fill this position will need to be sociable, friendly, courteous, and familiar with information regarding TIDFAF.  Volunteers will be handling money in this position.

 

“Spotlight” Networking Reception Volunteers:

Date & Time: Saturday May 14, 2011- 7 p.m. to midnight

Location: Deaf Culture Centre

Description: Volunteers will sell drink tickets or serve at the bar (require Smart Serve).

 

Transportation / Drivers:

Date & Time: This position will take place the days prior to the festival between 7 am to 7 pm.

Description: Volunteer drivers will drive to the airport to pick up international film makers and actors and drop them off at their hotel.  Volunteers will be required to have to their full G license, car insurance, several years of experience, and access to a car.

 

Photographers:

Date & Time: Thursday May 12, 2011- 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday May 14, 2011- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday May 15, 2011- 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Location:  Innis Town Hall

Description: Volunteer Photographers will take pictures during the festival and will be required to bring their own materials and equipment.

 

On-Call Volunteers:

Back-up volunteers willing to fill in on an on-call basis.
